Why Should You Take This Introduction to the Heat Island Effect Webinar?
Learn about the heat island effect and why it is a concern from a sustainability standpoint in this 1-hour introductory webinar. The course will first define the heat island effect, explain why it is a concern, and then describe several spillover benefits associated with mitigating the effect. Benefits discussed will include stormwater management, habitat and open space restoration, as well as energy efficiency improvements. The webinar will place a particular emphasis on differences between roof-oriented initiatives verses non-roof oriented initiatives.
Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to specify the primary purpose and benefits of mitigating the heat island effect. In addition, they will be able to identify the primary strategies that are most useful for mitigation purposes, and will be able to compare examples of implementation efforts across regions and building types. Finally, students will understand the synergies between heat island effect mitigation and other green building initiatives.
Students will be introduced to the topic of why the urban heat island effect occurs and learn why mitigation is so important.
