Why Should You Take This Electrical Safety and Grounding webinar?

This Electrical Safety and Grounding webinar is intended to give field operations personnel in industrial and commercial operations, including power company field operations personnel, a comprehensive understanding of the theory behind safe electrical practices. Emphasis is on working around equipment commonly found within industrial, commercial and electric utility industries in both the energized and de-energized conditions.

This course also covers the fundamentals of "equipotential groundingused for safe work activities on overhead and underground power lines and in substations and large facilities. These concepts are expanded to cover the many electrical safety issues involving industrial and utilities in construction, maintenance and operations. This course provides the foundation for overall electrical safety procedures that can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury accidents.

Target Audience:  Electrical engineers, field operations personnel, and safety specialists who require a comprehensive understanding of the theories, concepts, and proper procedures needed for safe electrical practices.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the various safety agencies involved with the safety of personnel working in the power industry
  • Summarize the importance of having a managed safety program to monitor and instruct employees in safety awareness
  • List and describe the proper PPE to use in electrical operations
  • Describe the types of accidental energization
  • Discuss the safety aspects and procedures when working with energized equipment
  • Explain the principles behind Live Line Maintenance for safety
  • Describe Arc-Flash and what is expected of power companies
  • Explain what is and is not covered in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC) for electric utilities
  • Describe the concept of step and touch potentials
  • Define and discuss Ground Potential Rise (GPR)

Benefits of Completing the Training:

  • The student gains a better understanding of the types of electrical accidents, their causes, safety procedures used to minimize risk and how to avoid electrical accidents through situation awareness
  • The student gains confidence in electrical safety practices through thorough discussions of knowing where dangerous touch and step potentials exist and how to properly avoid them.
  • The student gains an appreciation as to industry accepted practices on testing personal equipment protection and their role in assuring a safe working environment

Prerequisites:  There are no prerequisites for taking this course
