Why Should You Take This TOSHA Excavation, Trenching, and Shoring - Competent Person course?
This OSHA Excavation, Trenching, and Shoring - Competent Person course is designed to give supervisors, inspectors, site managers, and workers the ability to identify existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings of an open trench. This course addresses the regulatory excavation standard through the eyes of the competent person.
"Competent person" means one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. In order to be a Competent Person for Trenching, Shoring, and Excavation, one must have had specific training in, and be knowledgeable about: soils analysis, the use of protective systems, and the requirements of state and federal standards.
Participants will be instructed on field applications in order to help minimize the risks of employee injuries, accidents and equipment failures on the worksite. Hands-on training and field exercises may be used to demonstrate how to conduct a trench inspection, soil classification or installation and use of protective systems such as shields or shoring.

The overall purpose of the strategic planning process is to guide the College in the improvement of educational opportunity and service to the citizens of Craven County. This necessitates that we consistently improve the quality and breadth of our educational programs and services. The final plan, “MANY VOICES ONE VISION: CRAVEN 2015‚†serves to enrich the character of the College and to define its central role within the community, the region and the State of North Carolina. The plan identifies a series of strategic goals to address a diverse community and a global economy. Building on the new College Mission, Vision, Core Values and Strategic Goals, the plan incorporates information and ideas contributed by constituent groups within the College as well as from external stakeholders and community leaders. The three Strategic Goals are a comprehensive response to the needs of our community and the institution at this time and they represent enormous potential for growth and expansion of the college.
