The Lead Risk Assessor training course provides information for those individuals who wish to perform lead-based paint Risk Assessment or Lead Hazard Screening services. This class will prepare students to perform on-site inspection, take samples, determine the severity of lead hazards, and develop options for eliminating those hazards.

A Risk Assessor can perform all of the duties that an Inspector can (including work that falls under the Lead RRP Rule and HUD's Lead-Safe Housing rule). In addition, a Risk Assessor is responsible for identifying all lead-based paint hazards and making recommendations for their treatment, including maintenance and monitoring schedules.


The Lead Inspector class is a pre-requisite for Lead Risk Assessor, in addition to education and experience requirements - please confirm eligibility for this course prior to registering.

  • Roles and Responsibilities of Risk Assessor
  • Visual inspections
  • Identifying Potential Sources of Lead-Based Paint Hazards
  • Lead Hazard Screen Protocol
  • Preparation of Final Risk Assessment Report
  • Development of Hazard Control Options

 

Requirements for Successful Course Completion:

  • Ability to Read, Understand and Speak English Language
  • Attend entire course in consecutive days
  • Pass a written, multiple choice exam 


This course is provided by an accredited trainer that is approved by the necessary EPA and/or Authorized-State lead program, as required based on the course location.

It is the participant's responsibility to verify that the course they attend will be accepted in any other state(s) where you will be performing work, and to process any required paperwork that may be necessary.

STATE REQUIREMENTS (Lead Risk Assessor Certification Initial)**
Individual Prerequisites-Successfully complete and receive a course completion certificate for a lead-based paint inspector training course -Bachelor's degree and one year experience in a related field that demonstrates skills directly transferable to the job activities for risk assessor, OR -Associate's degree and two years experience in a related field that demonstrates skills directly transferable to the job activities for risk assessor, OR -Certification as an industrial hygienist, professional engineer, registered architect, OR -High school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of experience in a related field that demonstrates skills directly transferable to the job activities for risk assessor
Accrediting BodyNorth Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
Individual App Requirements$150 every two years
Individual Exam And FeesThird party Inspector and Risk Assessor exams. $150 combined exam fee.
Company Application Requirements$50 annually
Refresher Training-Per 10A NCAC 41C .0802, an applicant for initial certification shall have successfully completed an accredited initial training course for the specific category within the 12 months immediately preceding application, or, if initial training was completed more than 12 months prior to application, the applicant shall have successfully completed an accredited refresher training course for the specific category at least every 24 months from the date of completion of initial training and within 12 months prior to applying for certification. -Submit a completed application, refresher training certificate, a photograph, and appropriate fees. -For renewal of Risk Assessor certification, submit refresher training certificates for both inspector and risk assessor training courses and a fee of $150.00.
ReciprocityLimited reciprocity agreements with the Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi lead-based paint programs and may accept training for certification from those training providers accredited by Alabama, Georgia or Mississippi's state authorized programs. Because reciprocity agreements are subject to change, it is strongly recommended that you contact the HHCU before taking training from any source not included on the North Carolina list below.
