As of February 2nd, 2010 the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) began offering the LEED Green Associate exam in Canada. The credential has been available in the U.S. since the summer of 2009 and becoming a LEED Green Associate (GA) is the first step to becoming a LEED Accredited Professional (AP).
"The green building world is expanding; key players include not only those in the building industry but also sales and marketing professionals, lawyers, real estate brokers, product manufacturers and suppliers, students and more," said Peter Templeton, President, GBCI. "The LEED Green Associate credential gives these individuals a way to differentiate themselves from their peers in a highly competitive job market."
GBCI is a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington D.C. and is the agency that not only administers the LEED exams but also reviews building documentation for projects attempting LEED certification. The agency works closely with the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) which creates LEED rating systems.
The Green Associate credential has opened doors to professionals who previously may not have considered LEED Accreditation. While LEED credentials have always been the industry standard for architects, engineers, contractors and interior designers directly involved with green projects, Templeton’s quote illustrates that the GA credential is ideal for a much wider pool of candidates.

One eligibility requirement for candidates wishing to sit for the GA exam is that they must confirm that they’ve attended an education program addressing green building principles. As a reaction to this requirement and to pent-up demand for green training in the Toronto area, Green Education Services has launched its suite of LEED seminars for the months of April, May, and June of 2010. The first intensive one-day GA training will be offered in Toronto on April 6th, 2010. Green Education Services offers discounts for full time students, the unemployed, and ‘earlybirds’ who sign up at least two weeks before the training.
