In Florida, A Platinum Football Stadium
Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 10:20PM Below, a video illustrates how the University of Florida’s new Heavener Football Complex became the first LEED-Platinum athletic facility in the country.
The complex, an addition to the existing Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, is also the first building in the state of Florida to achieve LEED-Platinum status. The $28 million facility, which opened last spring, earned 52 out of 69 possible points to receive the rating, according to a University of Florida news release about the project.
The facility includes offices, conference rooms, an atrium with trophy display space, and weight-training facilities. The building’s sustainable highlights are numerous: together the facility’s energy-saving measures exceed state and federal efficiency standards by 35 percent, and the building’s low-flow fixtures reduce water consumption by 40 percent compared to a conventionally built facility. During construction, 78 percent of construction debris was recycled.
The building was designed by architecture firm RDG Planning and Design.
