Abatement is any set of measures designed to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards. Abatement work that is not conducted by a Certified Lead Abatement Worker is subject to heavy fines by local governments and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

This course is offered in-person, and includes both training and certification for lead abatement workers. Certified abatement firms must have certified Lead Abatement Workers on site who have completed lead abatement training & certification from an approved provider, and have registered and been approved by the EPA or local governing body. Contractors performing abatement work must have at least one EPA or state certified Lead Abatement Supervisor conducting the work, with the assistance of certified Lead Abatement Workers if required.

Training concludes with the required Lead Worker course certification exam.

For EPA-Controlled States (NY, SC, FL, MT, SD, WY, ID, NV, AZ, NM, AK), there are 4 steps to be sure you are in compliance:

  1. Get registered for an EPA approved lead abatement certification course
  2. Pass the course exam to receive an Interim Certificate that is valid for 6 months
  3. Submit an individual application to the EPA with the appropriate fees
  4. Receive approval from the EPA and you're in the clear!

*There is no 3rd-Party Exam for Lead Abatement Workers

Please be advised, initial training in an EPA-controlled state (listed above) for lead abatement disciplines DOES NOT certify you to work in NON-EPA Controlled States (see below)

For the 39 states controlling their own Lead Abatement Program, please note:  Your state may have detailed education, experience and application processing requirements to qualify for licensing in the Lead field. Students are responsible to verify these requirements prior to registering for a course.
